COVID-19 - Life with not against Corona

Aber was eigentlich genau?

Gut so.

COVID-19 – Life with not against Corona

by Dr. Andrea Sibylle Claussen, June 10, 2020

How should things go in the months and years after the shutdown?

The pandemic remains - and we are going back to our "old" lives and habits.

The city-centers are not empty any more, the traffic jams are back. Only the airports are still gost-places.

I waited 3 months to visit my sick 85 year old mother again. I was scared to put her and my father at risk.

During this period, she said she didn't want to live anymore. She only ate like a sparrow.

I wanted to hold her hand and be with her without a damn rubber glove.

I woke up one morning and said to myself: “Stop this. I am going to see my mother now. With mask and distance but it cannot go on like this.” Since then I've been visiting her every weekend.

She is doing much better. And my father who is looking after her is doing much better too.

We no longer stare at death statistics like the rabbit in front of the snake and the famous "R" – index that has lost its power regarding the decision-making process of politicians. Things change fast these days.

Some ambitious virologists have had a brief period of fame. Now the mood changes even against some scientists. Because they keep talking about the danger. We agree but we don't want to hear this story anymore.

We want to get back to life, work, love, have contact with other people. We are human beings.

We have to learn to live with Corona and not against Corona.

The victims of Corona will soon no longer be the same as stated before.

The victims of Corona, after several months of lockdown, are not the old and the sick people any more, but a majority of the working population, artists, single mothers and children.

The long-term consequences for society are not yet foreseeable, but there will be a huge “collateral damage” from Corona.

There is a time now when we begin to live normality with the permanent presence of Corona: Some people may feel calmer, more conscious, more mindful. Some feel the opposite or are caught in angst.

With or without warning on our smartphone app: Corona stays with us and no government in this world can protect us from the virus.

With the relaxation of the rules and prohibitions, I learn to accept my own vulnerability. Corona was and is a cascading natural disaster.

A collective tsunami for our lives: a quiet start with a water that is withdrawing from the beach - then the huge wave that brought the whole world to a standstill.

Where exactly are we in the course of the wave?

For me, bold political leadership means that in the next weeks and months to come, responsibility regarding how to face the virus, shall go back to every citizen. With or without an app.

This means that politicians need to tell us clearly and understandably that no government and no no rules cannot protect us long-term from getting sick.

Now, with the applicable rules, each individual can start building trust in his or her own body and in our amazing immune system - and from there - now going back to normal everyday life. Gradually, courageously and confidently.

We experience a collective passage from the pre-corona period to the post-corona period.

Something has changed. But what exactly?

We are now returning to our little lives with or without a designer branded protection-mask - experiencing this transition in our own way - while the pandemic is still smouldering.

And that is a good thing.
